News Brief: `Giant' to be on TV

The Farmers' Museum in Cooperstown will be featured on an episode of The Travel Channel's "Mysteries at the Museum" program at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9.

According to a media release from the museum, the episode was filmed during the spring and features several staff members in a re-enactment regarding the "discovery" of the Cardiff Giant.

The giant, a 10-foot figure made of gypsum, was created by George Hull in 1868. Hull buried the figure near Cardiff, N.Y., and attempted to pass it off as an artifact. The figure drew many curious spectators even after it was revealed to be a hoax. The giant is part of the permanent collection at The Farmers' Museum.

The program will feature other disputed "artifacts," including a set of wooden teeth said to have belonged to George Washington, and a dummy from the Roswell UFO Museum in New Mexico.
