The day after his sweeping win in the 20th Congressional District race, Republican Chris Gibson was on a tight schedule after three hours of sleep.
Gibson campaign spokesman Daniel Odescalchi said the celebration at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs went until 3 a.m.
"The excitement in the room was absolutely palpable," Odescalchi said. "You could feel the energy."
Gibson said Wednesday that he was honored to have received the support of the voters.
"We won nine of 10 counties," Gibson said. "I look forward to representing my constituents."
Gibson said the campaign centered on efforts to get the vote out.
"During the last week the results of the Siena Research Institute poll showing a lead of nine points over incumbent Democrat Scott Murphy gave us momentum on our side," Gibson said. "We were optimistic going into Election Day."
Gibson is one of the more than 60 new Republicans going to the House of Representatives in January.
In his acceptance speech, he said: "It's going to be the responsibility of the new Congress to alter this hostile environment. It's got to change."
During the campaign, Gibson pledged to fight for smaller government, reduce spending and lower taxes. He said he opposes socialized health care, fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicaid and Medicare system and advocates for increased competition and tort reform.
Gibson said he planned to listen to small-business owners and work hard for farmers.
"The issue is profitability," he said. "We have to target taxes and health care costs and balance the budget, not by raising taxes but by lowering federal taxes."
Gibson said he hopes everyone will learn from history.
"The last time there was a Democratic president and a Republican Congress the country got a lot done. There was a balanced budget and meaningful welfare reform," he said. "We have to work together and not worry about who gets the credit."
Gibson won Delaware County by a 61 to 39 percentage over Murphy.
"I really enjoyed getting to know the voters in Delaware County, and I look forward to serving them," he said.
The 20th Congressional District includes all or parts of Columbia, Dutchess, Delaware, Essex, Greene, Otsego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties.
Gibson said Essex was the only county where he was not in the lead, according to unofficial election results Tuesday.
