Local man arrested for shooting bear

A Hancock man was arrested May 19 on two charges after illegally shooting a black bear, state Department of Environmental Conservation police said.

Ward S. Dunlap, 39, was charged with shooting within 500 feet of a dwelling, and illegally shooting a black bear out of season. Both are misdemeanors and punishable by fines of up to $3,000 dollars and/or up to two years in jail, police said.

Police said the following happened on the day of the arrest: Several people were at an ice cream shop on Route 97 in Hancock and watched a large black bear across the street. The bear was on the wood line digging though a bag of garbage when Dunlap came out of his house and fired multiple shots at it.

The bear was chased toward Dunlap and he continued to fire at it. Two officers had to euthanize the bear after tracking it for several hundred yards.
