ONEONTA —
People interviewed at an unveiling for a downtown mural in Oneonta on Friday were thrilled with what they saw. Artist Cynthia Marsh unveiled the sketch of the wilderness scene she plans on painting on the wall of Clinton Plaza at a reception at Elena Pastry/Cafe.
The mural will be titled 'First People.' "This is the launching point" of the project Marsh is spearheading as part of the Main Street Oneonta Mural Project, she said. The sketch is the artist's conception of American Indians on an outcropping in the 1760s.
It could be a scene that someone traveling on the Susquehanna River might have viewed, according to a note that accompanied the painted 20-by-60-inch sketch. According to Marsh, when painted on the eastern wall of the building, the mural will feature more of the indigenous birds other designs, which were in some of the paintings at Elena's.
There will probably be more foliage, the rocks will probably be more textured, she said. "It's wonderful," said Jacki Hunt of Westbury Property Management Group, which owns Clinton Plaza.
"It's a great start to our downtown mural project." Erik Miller, executive director of the Otsego County Conservation Association, is also working on the effort. The project will get under way after some work is completed to the building, possibly later this month, Hunt said. She said she hopes Marsh can start by June, when the weather will be right for the outdoor work. Among those who were impressed by the artwork was Emily VanLaeys of Oneonta.
"I think it's beautiful," she said. "I'm amazed she will have so many details."
Melanie Castine, also of Oneonta, said, "I love the design of the mural." The references to the history of the area are "a great way to welcome people to downtown," she said. The event is part of a monthly series at Elena's featuring local artists, partner Elena Doyle said.
The shop donates the space supplies refreshments as part of an effort to highlight Oneonta talent. "I think it's wonderful," she said of Marsh's work. When completed, "this is something we will always remember."
