It will be a family affair when the top Laurens seniors take the stage at Friday's high school graduation ceremonies. Other area high schools are holding their ceremonies either Friday or during the weekend.
John Marmet is the Laurens Central School valedictorian with an average of 96.44. His fraternal twin, Anthony Marmet, is salutatorian with a 95.12 average. Both will be addressing those attending the ceremony. The two talked about the honor by phone Friday.
Other schools holding their ceremonies Friday include Afton, Franklin, Milford, Morris and Unatego.
The only other school in the area with twins earning the top honors is Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School, where Danielle and Michelle Eckler are valedictorian and salutatorian respectively. That graduation is Saturday, along with ceremonies at schools including Delhi, Margaretville, Oneonta, and Sidney. Sunday graduations include Cooperstown and Worcester.
John Marmet said this is the first time in the school's history that brothers, let alone twins, have earned both valedictorian and salutatorian in the same year. His sister, Alyson, was salutatorian in 2008. Superintendent Romona Wenck did not return a call for comment.
He is very competitive with his brother, who is fifteen minutes older, but its has always stayed friendly, he said.
"I am very glad he was also honored, he worked hard." John Marmet said.
They are competitive in sports, where for most of their years they played soccer, basketball and track. Although they are close friends and do a lot together, when the game was over they compare statistics to see who is best, John Marmet said. The two are equally athletic, he added, though Anthony has more endurance, while John is a sprinter.
Both plan on attending State University College at Oneonta in the fall. John will be studying computer science and his brother plans to study biology, with the goal of becoming a physical therapist.
John Marmet said he will miss high school sports and the friends he made. But not much else will be changing, because the two will be staying home and commuting. The change will come when they finish college.
"I am happy to share the honors with John," Anthony Marmet said. The brothers have always lived with their parents in Laurens, but they attended Oneonta Community Christian School from grades K-6. In some ways it was the same as attending Laurens Central School, Anthony Marmet said.
He knew all the students and teachers, and "everybody's nice," he said. The biggest change was playing sports.
When they came to school everyone wanted them to play pranks and switch clothes, "but we didn't go for that," he said.
Instead he focused on athletics, did his homework and did the best he could on tests. He knew as a sophomore that he had a chance for top honors, but said his brother was always "just a tad ahead of me."
"He is always there for me. We always help each other," he said. While he doesn't know where their paths will go at college and after, "we will always be close."
Both teens credit their mother, Diane Marmet, with helping
