Inmate charged with attempted assault

An inmate was charged with felony attempted assault, Otsego County deputies said Monday.

Shawn Richard Bennett, 39, a parolee and inmate, was charged Monday with second-degree attempted assault, deputies said in a media release. He was accused of punching another inmate several times in the head, causing an abrasion to the inmate's face.

Bennett, who is from New Berlin, was arrested in Otsego County jail, where he is being held without bail on an unrelated state parole warrant, deputies said.

Bennett is to appear in Middlefield Town Court on the attempted assault charge, for which he faces a sentence of up to 15 years to life in prison because he has three previous felony convictions, deputies said.

On Thursday, the following streets will be paved: Myrtle Avenue, High Street, Normal Avenue, Monroe Avenue and Overlook Drive.
