The Oneonta Town Board approved a draft local law Thursday that would continue its moratorium on natural gas drilling at a workshop meeting. The original moratorium was passed in March 2012.
There were nine people in attendance. A public hearing on the proposed law is set for 7:45 p.m. March 13.
Soon after Thursday’s meeting began, Supervisor Robert Wood called a recess to allow the board to consult with its attorney, Cheryl Sacco. When the board returned about 45 minutes later, in response to a question by board member William Mirabito, Sacco said that a second moratorium may not be legally necessary and might open the town to litigation.
Although Mirabito said the town was in no position to put itself in legal jeopardy, he along with the other three board members approved the draft. Janet Hurley-Quackenbush was not in attendance.
While no one spoke during the public comment section of the meeting, Wood asked those who wanted to speak about the law to wait until the public hearing.
