A free screening open to the public of the documentary film "Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time" will be at 7 p.m. Friday in the Instructional Resource Center on West Dormitory Road at SUNY Oneonta.
The screening is sponsored by the college's Environmental Activism Club and the Otsego Land Trust.
The film, produced by the Aldo Leopold Foundation, the U.S. Forest Service and the Center for Humans and Nature, is the first full-length, high-definition documentary made about the influential 20th-century conservationist, according to a media release.
Leopold wrote "A Sand County Almanac," a classic of conservation literature, and promoted his idea of a "land ethic" in his work as an educator, philosopher, ecologist and wilderness advocate, the release said.
In addition to examining Leopold's life and work, the film traces the influence of his ideas on modern-day conservation programs, such as local food and ecological restoration efforts by school children in Chicago and cooperative community conservation by ranchers in New Mexico and Arizona, the release said.
The film will also be shown by the Otsego Land Trust at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown on March 16.
