Man charged with drunken driving after hitting pole

A man who drove his truck into a utility pole on Main Street early Wednesday morning was charged with drunken driving, Oneonta city police said.

Some residents were without power after the pole broke, police said.

Sumner Elwood, 22, of Maryland, was driving along Main Street at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday when his truck hit the pole near Taylor's gas station, police said.

Elwood fled on foot but was found at about 3:15 a.m. in someone else's vehicle, Chief Dennis Nayor said. Elwood was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, Nayor said.
