Police: Car, city vehicle collide

A Cooperstown man was traveling south on Main Street in Oneonta, crossing the viaduct, at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday when his car started to accelerate rapidly and struck a city maintenance vehicle, Oneonta police said.

Austin Sears, 64, said he was having a problem recently with the accelerator when he applied the brakes, according to police.

One person was treated and released in the accident, which police said happened when Sears drove his Crown Victoria into oncoming traffic and into Neahwa Park, sideswiping a city vehicle and crashing into a tree.

The city vehicle was being driven by Robert Stevens, 29, of Oneonta, who was transported to A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital for neck pain.

Sears refused treatment and was ticketed for unsafe lane change and unsafe speed, police said.
