Volunteers needed for Schoharie tree inventory

Volunteers are sought to help with an ash tree inventory for the village of Schoharie on Saturday, according to a media release from a regional conservation group.

The Catskill Regional Invasive Species Partnership, or CRISP, will host training sessions for any volunteers who want to participate in Saturday's inventory. The purpose of the program is to identify ash trees in public areas to assess the area's risk with regard to the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect that destroys ash trees. Emerald ash borer populations have been identified in Orange, Ulster, Greene and Albany counties.

Training sessions will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday and at 10 a.m. Saturday immediately before the inventory. Volunteers that attend a training session will receive background knowledge that focuses on ash tree identification, signs and symptoms of the emerald ash borer, and the inventory process.

Training will be at the Schoharie Free Library at 103 Knower Ave., where volunteers will also gather Saturday morning to begin the inventory. T-shirts and refreshments will be provided.

In the upcoming months, CRISP, hosted by The Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, will organize inventories throughout the Catskills. More information is available at www.catskillinvasives.com.
