Friends of Recovery of Delaware and Otsego Counties are recognizing National Recovery Month in September with a dinner and a walk and rally, as well as participation in a statewide rally later this month.
FOR-DO is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote recovery from addiction through every available means, including advocacy, education and peer support. The group held its annual Recovery Dinner on Friday in Delhi, celebrating the recovery process and honoring those who have reached milestones in their recovery.
On Sunday, FOR-DO will host a recovery walk and rally on Main Street in Oneonta from noon to 4 p.m. The event will include family-friendly activities, music and refreshments. A proclamation from state Sen. James Seward, R-Milford, will be read.
The organization plans to send representatives to a recovery rally in Albany's Washington Park on Sept. 25.
FOR-DO operates two community recovery centers; one at 22 Elm St. Oneonta and another at 167 Main St. Delhi. In addition to providing services, activities, education and support group meetings, the group is in the first year of a four-year federal grant program called Access to Recovery, serving people in recovery from substance abuse disorders. According to a media release, the grant is expected to serve more than 800 adults living in Otsego and Delaware counties.
The organization has recently also launched programs to assist people with special needs who have been affected by the recent flooding. The recovery centers in Delaware and Otsego counties plan to offer financial assistance for clothing and other basic needs with assistance from the state Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services.
According to the release, National Recovery Month aims to laud the gains made by those in recovery from substance abuse and mental disorders, and to highlight the gains that are possible through addiction treatment and mental health services.
