SUNY Delhi ranks among the Top 50 colleges in the nation for online baccalaureate degree education in two categories, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The rankings mark the first time that U.S. News and World Report has evaluated online higher education programs and represents the most recent national recognition for Delhi's online programs.

"We are proud to be named an online education leader," Candace Vancko, president of the State University College of Technology at Delhi, said in a prepared statement. "It recognizes SUNY Delhi's commitment to delivering high quality, online programs that are innovative, flexible and affordable."

U.S. News ranked Delhi 42nd of 172 colleges and universities for Student Engagement and Assessment and 46th of 179 colleges and universities for Student Services and Technology.

Recognizing the growing importance of online education at the college, U.S. News said on its website last week that its first Top Online Education Programs rankings has been released.

U.S. News reported that online course enrollment in the United States hit an all-time high in 2010 with more than 6.1 million students, according to a 2011 report by the Babson Survey Research Group.

Enrollment in online classes doubled between 2007 and 2011, driven largely by a stagnant economy and competitive job market, but also by robust online offerings from established public and private institutions, the report said.

U.S. News ranked 196 online bachelor's degree programs and 523 online master's degree programs in business, engineering, nursing, education and computer information technology. Programs considered for the rankings were required to have at least 80 percent of the course content available online.

Bachelor's programs were ranked in student engagement and assessment; student services and technology; and faculty credentials and training. Master's programs had similar ranking categories and were ranked on student engagement and accreditation, rather than assessment, and had a separate indicator ranking for admissions selectivity.

SUNY Delhi's RN to BSN program for registered nurses seeking bachelor's degrees was the first degree of its kind to be offered totally online in New York state, a media release from the college said. Enrollment has grown from 20 students in 2008 to nearly 500 this year.

"Our faculty and staff have done an outstanding job of creating a quality program that meets the needs of the nursing profession," Mary Pat Lewis, associate dean of SUNY Delhi's School of Nursing, said in the release. "This ranking validates that SUNY Delhi is able to sustain quality instruction, program outcomes and student support services."

SUNY Delhi's RN to BSN curriculum is designed for working registered nurses who wish to pursue a bachelor's degree. Online delivery offers students greater versatility and flexibility with students able to enroll part-time for full-time in the fall, spring or summer semesters. Practical, hands-on experiences for select courses are completed in the student's hometown area.

SUNY Delhi's online RN to BSN program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission and recently was selected by the Continuing Education Association of New York State as the 2010 winner of the James C. Hall Jr. Exemplary Program Award. The program has also been featured by InsideHigherEd.
