Grant to help water system

$260K to be used to build well, replace main in Arkville

Arkville is set to receive $260,000 to improve its water system, according to a media release from U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer.

The water and waste disposal grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be used for upgrades in the hamlet of Arkville for the Arkville Water District. The project will install an additional well and control building, and replace water main along state Route 28.

According to the release, the system does not meet public health regulations because there is no backup water source. In addition, the distribution lines are deteriorated and undersized.

The town was working on the system when Hurricane Irene hit last year. The town has been granted additional grant funds to make this project affordable to the existing residents left in the town after the flooding.

Arkville is a hamlet in the town of Middletown.

"Efficiently supporting our rural communities with funding for clean water and sewer repairs spurs job and boosts our economy," Schumer said in the release. "Funding water renewal projects in the Hamlet of Arkville will protect public health and bring infrastructure jobs to the region even while it spurs local economic development."

The funding is part of the USDA Rural Development annual budget.
