Cooperstown Relay For Life sets fundraising record

Although it has been a couple months since the Cooperstown/Northern Otsego County Relay For Life, money is still being raised to benefit the American Cancer Society.

According to event Chairwoman Carla Eckler, more than $108,000 had been raised as of last week. Eckler said the total represents the most raised in the 14-year history of the cancer fundraiser. Donations are still coming in, as the deadline for turning in funds is not until Aug. 31, she added.

The event was held May 18 and 19 at the Cooperstown Dreams Park and is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Ecker said more than 470 people participated.

"As the chairperson and on behalf of the entire Planning Committee, I would like to congratulate the participants on their amazing fundraising efforts, and to sincerely thank the residents, businesses and organizations that supported our efforts in countless ways," Eckler said. "It is truly gratifying to be able to assist the American Cancer Society's mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service."

The Planning Committee will begin meeting in September for next year's event.
