Dem 19th district hopefuls to debate

The two Democrats vying to run against Rep. Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook, are slated to have their first and _ barring last-minute changes _ only debate today in New Paltz.

Joel Tyner, a school teacher and member of the Dutchess County Legislature, had challenged former federal prosecutor Julian Schreibman of Stone Ridge to multiple debates in the final days of the campaign leading up to the June 26 primary this year for federal offices.

Schreibman has no time to engage in additional debates with Tyner because he has a schedule crammed with meetings and events with voters throughout the 11 counties in the new 19th Congressional District right up until the primary, said Schreibman campaign manager Jonathan Levy.

Monday's debate will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Woodland Pond retirement community in New Paltz. It will be moderated by Gerald Benjamin, a retired political science professor at the State University College at New Paltz and the former GOP chairman of the Ulster County Legislature.

Schreibman has gained an advantage over Tyner in both fundraising and endorsements from several county Democratic committees. According to Federal Elections Commission campaign finance report filings, Schreibman has $257,316.95 in his campaign account versus $8,500 for Tyner. Gibson has already amassed slightly more than $1 million in his campaign account.

Tyner said he will be endorsed next Thursday by Oneonta Town Supervisor Robert Wood. He has also been endorsed by Adrian Kuzminski, founder and moderator of Sustainable Otsego. Kuzminski has argued that Schreibman has not come out strongly against hydraulic fracturing of shale gas and has referred to Tyner as the "real anti-fracker in the race."

This week, however, after the New York Times reported the Cuomo administration is poised to allow fracking in five Southern Tier counties, Schreibman took a shot at the plan on his Facebook page.

"I do not support the plan floated in The New York Times that would open up a portion of New York to risky shale gas drilling," Schreibman wrote. "No public health study has been conducted, despite calls from hundreds of medical professionals across the state ... By allowing this to move forward now the state is ignoring science, and taking a shoot-first, ask-questions-later approach that will not sit well with the men and women of upstate New York."

Tyner said he is disappointed that Schreibman rejected his invitation for six debates over the next week that would be moderated by the American Association of University Women.

He said he plans to attend those events and have an empty chair represent Schreibman.
