Otsego GOP endorses Long in Senate bid

COOPERSTOWN -- The Otsego County Republican Committee has endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Wendy Long in her bid to unseat incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., committee Chairwoman Sheila Ross said Tuesday.

Long is vying with two other Republicans -- U.S. Rep. Bob Turner and George Maragos -- to emerge as the GOP nominee from New York's June 26 congressional primary.

Long is a New York City litigation lawyer who formerly served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Ross said she sees Gillibrand as beatable, noting Long has "impeccable credentials" and powerful skills as a public speaker.

The Otsego Republicans also gave their nod to Assembly candidate Levi Spires, who is challenging Assemblyman Bill Magee, D-Nelson.

The local committee is also backing five Republican incumbents: state Sen. Jim Seward, R-Milford; Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney, now running in the revised 101st Assembly District; Assemblyman Pete Lopez, R-Schoharie; Assemblyman Clifford Crouch, R-Guilford; and U.S. Rep. Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook.

Ross said there was overwhelming support for Seward, who had competition for the endorsement from James Blake, 54, of Schenevus. According to his website, Blake is a former insurance executive and was a founding member of a Georgia group called Republicans for Integrity in Politics.
