Arson suspect Bugel to appear in court

ONEONTA -- A felony hearing was set Tuesday for an Oneonta man accused of attempted arson.

Gable Bugel of Oneonta will appear for a hearing in Oneonta City Court on July 25. Bugel, 22, was charged April 16 with third-degree attempted arson for allegedly trying to start a fire behind Community Bank on Main Street.

Bugel has since been held in Otsego County jail on $15,000 cash, or $30,000 bail, on the city charge and without bail on a county charge, officials said.

In court Tuesday, Andrew Puritz, Bugel's attorney, acknowledged to Judge Lucy Bernier that she had denied a request for reduced bail, and Bugel was sent back to jail.

Bugel previously had waived time restrictions on the felony hearing to accommodate a mental health evaluation, among other issues. A telephone number for Puritz wasn't accepting messages Tuesday afternoon.
