Arson suspect's hearing delayed

ONEONTA -- The felony hearing of a local man accused of trying to start a fire behind an Oneonta bank has been postponed, a prosecutor said Wednesday.

Gable Bugel of Oneonta, whose defense attorney is Andrew Puritz, was to appear Wednesday for a hearing in Oneonta City Court.

Bugel, 22, was charged by city police April 16 with third-degree attempted arson for allegedly trying to start a fire behind Community Bank on Main Street.

City Prosecutor Michael Getman said the hearing was postponed because Bugel admitted to a violation of probation in Otsego County Court and has been resentenced to jail time.

Also, Bugel's attorney is trying to negotiate a disposition with the district attorney regarding new felony charges, Getman said in a telephone message.

District Attorney John Muehl didn't return a message left at his office by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
