Delhi woman faces drug, animal cruelty charges

A Delhi woman was arrested Friday on animal cruelty charges after Delaware County deputies and the Delaware County District Attorney's Office executed an arrest warrant issued by Kortright Town Court, according to a media release from the District Attorney's Office.

She denied the charges.

Susan Marino, 60, and the organization she is president of, Angel's Gate, 510 Archie Elliot Road, Delhi, a hospice and rehabilitation home for animals, were charged with five counts of cruelty to animals, a violation of state Agriculture and Markets law, and one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a violation of penal law.

Marino was released on her own recognizance to appear at a later date.

District Attorney Richard Northrup was not in his office Friday and did not return a call for comment. Sheriff Thomas Mills said the cruelty charges involved dogs and cats but referred further questions to Northrup. David Perle, a spokesman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said in a release that the charges follow an investigation prompted by PETA evidence. Although Marino was charged, the treatment of animals at Angel's Gate continues and PETA asked the state Attorney General to remove the animals from Marino's custody and Angel's Gate be dissolved.

The accusations are false, Marino said when reached at Angel's Gate on Friday.

"I'm really sad it came to this. We do good work," she said, adding that her facility was open to inspection.

The substance-abuse charge stems from a misunderstanding about medication used to care for animals, she said. The charges by PETA represent a difference in philosophy, with Angel's Gate believing every animal deserves a chance, even those that are paralyzed or have cancer, she said. She did not want to speak to the PETA philosophy.

PETA Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch said the charges are the result of an independent criminal investigation by the District Attorney's Office that has to do with state anti-cruelty statutes, and has nothing to do with philosophy.
