Oneonta patrol vehicle gets stuck during chase

An Oneonta police patrol vehicle got stuck on railroad tracks Tuesday afternoon as officers were chasing a man after a reported domestic dispute.

Kevin G. Vecchione, 25, of Oneonta, was charged with resisting arrest, criminal obstruction of breathing, harassment and criminal mischief, police said.

He was held in the lockup overnight pending appearance in Oneonta City Court this morning.

Lt. Douglas Brenner gave a report about the 1:30 p.m. incident as follows:

Police were called about a fight between a man and a woman on the railroad tracks below the Main Street viaduct behind the vicinity of Stewart's Shop.

Sgt. Christopher Witzenburg responded in a patrol car by driving to an access site off of Grace Place.

Oneonta fire department crews responded and checked on the woman, who had some bruises. Vecchione fled and Witzenburg reported via radio the suspect's direction.

Meanwhile, Brenner ran from the police station on Main Street to 22 Market St., where Vecchione had emerged from the railyard and had sat down.

"I said 'You have to go with me,"' Brenner told Vecchione, who responded by physically resisting arrest.

Chief Dennis Nayor and detectives Jeffrey Jump and Eric Berger had arrived at the scene, and the detectives helped put handcuffs onto Vecchione.

The police department notified Canadian Pacific railroad about the patrol car stuck on the tracks, Brenner said, and a tow truck removed the vehicle, which had some damage underneath.
