U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna, R-Barneveld, is one of three GOP House members to receive support from a Republican super PAC trying to move candidates toward backing gay marriage, according to a story on the website Politico.
The super PAC, American Unity, is "the voice of Republican voters who are committed to equal rights and full relationship recognition for gay and lesbian Americans," according to its website. While that website had no direct information about the backing, it did have a link to the Politico story.
Besides Hanna, American Unity is backing Reps. Mary Bono Mack, a Republican from California, and Judy Biggert, a Republican from Illinois.
The story quotes a source familiar with the situation saying that "for the long-term success of the (Republican) party, it must be able to reach gay and lesbian Americans and "the millions of Americans who are related to them."
It picked Republicans who not only have a chance of winning but who have taken "decisive positions that the group seeks to acknowledge."
Hanna, a member of the House LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) Equality Caucus since last year, co-sponsored the Employment Nondiscrimination Act and opposed four amendments that affirmed the Defense of Marriage Act.
Hanna was not available for comment Friday.
His spokeswoman Renee Gamela said he supports the current system of regulation of marriage laws by the states.
Gamela said about the PAC support that Hanna welcomes "anyone who is supporting his campaign and his efforts to make upstate New York a better place to live and work."
The super political action committee is an independent organization that has no involvement, communication or coordination with the campaign.
"(Hanna's) record of working to ensure equal treatment under the law for all Americans is a responsibility he takes seriously," she said.
