Cornel West will deliver the keynote address at the college's upcoming recognition of the 20th anniversary of the "Black List," college President Nancy Kleniewski announced Friday.
West, author of "Race Matters" and "Democracy Matters," will speak at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 in the ballroom of the Hunt College Union at the State University College at Oneonta, according to a media release. The event will be free and open to the public.
The "Black List" refers to the release by the college of a list naming black students on Sept. 4, 1992, in response to a request from state police who were investigating a crime. The incident sparked local outrage that grew into national attention and raised civil rights, racial profiling and privacy issues.
In March, Kleniewski committed to funding speakers, performers, research and other efforts to support an event recognizing the "Black List." As a result, the college has dedicated this Sept. 4 as a day to examine diversity-related issues through a series of activities culminating in West's lecture.
"We are thrilled to have Dr. Cornel West join us on this important occasion," Kleniewski said in a prepared statement. "Truth, justice and love have been central to his life's work, and these themes also resonate as we reflect on the Black List and the progress our campus has made in the two decades since."
West is a prominent and provocative democratic intellectual, the release said. He is the Class of 1943 University Professor at Princeton University. He graduated from Harvard and obtained master's and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Princeton.
West has written 20 books and has edited 13. He is best known for his classics "Race Matters" and "Democracy Matters," and his new memoir, "Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud."
He appears on "Real Time With Bill Maher," "The Colbert Report," CNN, C-Span and on Tavis Smiley's PBS television show.
He is also co-host of the radio show "Smiley & West." The co-hosts have recently co-authored the book titled "The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto."
