Supermarkets to again support annual food drive

Two supermarkets again will support the annual 6th Ward Athletic Club Ani P. Colone Food Drive, which starts Wednesday, organizers said.

Last year's drive resulted in more than $4,500 worth of donated food and personal health items delivered to the St. James' Food Pantry in Oneonta, a media release from the club said, and the this year's drive, in its 29th year, will continue through April 6.

Hannaford and Price Chopper will help by placing receptacles near checkout counters for shoppers to deposit non-perishable food items directly for the drive, organizers said. Donated food items also will be accepted at the 6th Ward Athletic Club headquarters at 22 W. Broadway in Oneonta.

The drive was named for the late Ani P. Colone, a long-time Oneonta civic leader and advocate for the public good, organizers said. Colone served on area school boards for almost 30 years, with Boy Scouts for almost 50 years, and was a member of the 6th Ward Boosters' Club and the 6th Ward Athletic Club. His motto for life was "love your family, be grateful for all that you have and help others who need it," the release said.

"Each year we're compelled to do more with the drive both in our respect for Ani, as well to meet the increasing need that exists in our area," Club President Bob Thomas said in a prepared statement.

Cash donations will be accepted only through the 6th Ward Athletic Club, organizers said, and checks may be sent in attention to the food drive 6th Ward Athletic Club, 22 W. Broadway, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Organizers said the club this year raised its dollar-for-dollar challenge to $2,000.

The 6th Ward Athletic Club, which now has 503 members, was founded in 1959 with a mission to promote the health and recreation of the greater Oneonta area, the release said.
