Winning regional O.M. teams advance to state competition

Students from across the region met in Sidney Center on Saturday to compete in the Region 13 Odyssey of the Mind tournament.

The competition was at the Robert W. Harrold Campus of the Delaware-Chenango-Madison-Otsego Board of Cooperative Educational Services. The daylong event concluded with an awards ceremony at 6:15 p.m.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college, according to the program's website. Team members apply creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting interpretations of literary classics.

"Every year, it's just amazing what the students come up with," Stacie Haynes, coordinator of enrichment services at the DCMO BOCES, said Sunday. Teams were allowed up to seven students, she said, and she estimated most teams had six or seven students.

First-place teams will advance to the state competition at Binghamton University on March 31. According to a media release, teams winning first place teams in various categories were:

"¢ In the "Ooh-Motional Vehicle," Sherburne-Earlville Elementary School, division I; Hunter-Tannersville middle and high school, divisions II and III.

"¢ In Weird Science contests, Greene Intermediate School, division I; Sherburne Earlville Middle School, division II; and Hunter-Tannersville, division III.

"¢ In "To Be or Not To Be," Sherburne Earlville, division I; Hunter-Tannersville, division II; and Sherburne Earlville, division III.

"¢ In You Make the Call, Greene Central, division II; Hunter-Tannersville, division III.

"¢ In Odyssey Angels, Sidney Elementary School, division I ; Sherburne-Earlville, division II; and Sherburne Earlville, division III.

In addition, the region had a "lottery slot," in which a second-place team selected at random also may advance to the state contest, organizers said. That team is Walton Central School's problem 1, division II team.

Charlie and JoAnn Kiesel of Oxford, who have volunteered as judges since 1991, were honored as Charlie Kiesel retired this year from his position as "head judge," the release said, however, they still are involved as judges.

More than 70 people volunteered as judges and officials, Haynes said.

"We had really great volunteers this year, which helps make things go smoothly," Haynes said. Extra help with judging especially was appreciated as the program was in final stages and snow was falling and raising travel concerns, she said.
