Delaware Arc honors SUNY Delhi with partnership award

The Arc of Delaware County recently honored SUNY Delhi with its Partner of the Year Award. The award is presented to the community partner who has done the most to enhance opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Delaware County, Arc Director of Community Relations Catherine Tweedie said Tuesday.

Tweedie said approximately 35 people attended a ceremony July 20 to present the award.

SUNY Delhi President Candace Vancko was presented with the Partner of the Year plaque.

Tweedie said a special partnership has developed between The Arc of Delaware County and the State University of New York at Delhi, which led to changing the name of the annual award.

"It used to be called the Resources for Industry Partner of the Year and it was given to businesses that provided employment opportunities for our consumers," Tweedie said. "But SUNY Delhi really rose to the top when we were considering candidates for the award."

Tweedie said the partnership with SUNY Delhi began several years ago with a handful of SUNY students volunteering at Bike-A-Thon, Christmas parties and other special events.

Over the past three years, Professor Dave DeForest and many of his students have created new learning opportunities for people supported by Delarc who have an interest in nature and the great outdoors, Tweedie said.

SUNY students have worked with the Arc consumers to enhance their survival skills, build a shelter in the woods, plant trees to protect streams, tap maple trees and make syrup that they ate on pancakes.

Sammie Conklin, one of the people who participated in the nature classes, said he enjoyed learning new things and spending time with people his own age, according to Tweedie.

Through SUNY's Service Learning Program, Professor Amber Tatnall designed a program in which 17 SUNY students from her psychology courses were involved in an ongoing learning exchange through the Arc Community Living Skills center in Walton.

Tatnall's students did various projects, ranging from working one-on-one with a woman learning to make tie-dye T-shirts, to a small group of students creating a three-dimensional mural in a multi-sensory room.

Tweedie said Joe Bergamine, one of the people from CLS, wrote a letter saying, "I like how the Delhi Students decorated our sensory room. It looks great. I want to thank all the buddies who came to CLS. I like when the buddies helped teach my class. I hope to see them again."

In a joint letter, Jessica Elam and Shawn Bowker spoke about the volunteers who assisted Bowker with horseback riding. They said, "Their willingness to step up and help out was extremely appreciated. The volunteers we were blessed with showed dedication. They were respectful and treated (Bowker) as an individual."

Tweedie said plans are under way between Delarc and SUNY Delhi to shape new learning opportunities for the coming school year.
