Quilting group honored for community service

Regular contributions to community needs netted a local quilting group recognition from the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Susquehanna Quilting Guild's donations to a variety of organizations and people earned it the District 6 Community Service Award from the patriotic women's service organization, according to state DAR director and guild member Cecilia Russell. Russell said Wednesday that the award was presented at the guild's June 14 annual dinner. The District 6 region covers nine counties, including Otsego and Chenango.

Guild President Flo Loomis said her group has been donating quilts through this effort for at least 10 years. Loomis said members don't do service projects for the attention, but added that "it's nice to be recognized," calling it "significant" to draw the attention of an organization such as the DAR.

Some of the donations over the years included quilts for newborns at A.O. Fox Hospital, pillowcases for the local nursing homes, and comfort caps for chemotherapy patients. Catskill Area Hospice and the Violence Intervention Program of Opportunities for Otsego have also been beneficiaries.

Russell suggested the nomination to a member of the Oneonta DAR chapter that submitted the application. The award recognizes the group's humanitarian efforts, Russell said.

Knowing what members do, "I felt they deserved some recognition," she said.

The guild has about 85 members, with 50 active participants, who formally meet once a month. Members get together several times a month to sew on an informal basis.
