Local printmaker dies

Frank C. Eckmair, an internationally known printmaker from Gilbertsville, died Sunday, his wife said.

Eckmair, 81, died of a heart attack, Leigh Eckmair said. A service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

The late artist's career was the focus of "The Landscape of Memory: Prints by Frank C. Eckmair" in an exhibit at the New York State Museum in Albany in 2010-11.

The exhibition featured more than 80 works, mostly landscapes, which included framed woodcut prints, wood engravings, sculptures and the original woodblocks that track Eckmair's career as an artist and longtime Gilbertsville resident.

Eckmair said during an interview with The Daily Star in 2010 that the exhibition was the high point of his career.

He was born in 1930 and graduated from Gilbertsville Central School in 1948. Eckmair studied at universities in other states and had solo shows around the world. His works are in museums in many countries.

Eckmair taught at several universities, including Buffalo State College from 1963 until he retired in 1995. He maintained his home in Gilbertsville during his years away from the area.
