Students speak with state lawmakers about tobacco use

Some Delaware County members of Reality Check, a statewide anti-smoking group, went to Albany to talk with state lawmakers about the negative impacts of tobacco use and the need to continue programs that save lives and reduce the burden of tobacco use, a media release said.

Students from Delhi Central School met with Assemblyman Clifford Crouch, R-Guilford, and an aide from the office of Sen. John Bonacic, R-New Hope, to relay the importance of anti-tobacco efforts in their community, the Reality Check release about the Jan. 24 visit said.

"Reality Check is important in our community because we learn how the tobacco industry targets youths by advertising in convenience stores," Taylor Mostert, a student at the Delhi school, said in a prepared statement. "I have family members who have died from lung cancer, and I want to teach everyone I can about the dangers of tobacco."

The state has raised millions of dollars in tobacco-related revenues but hasn't reached spending levels for tobacco control programs that have been recommended the U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, the Reality Check release said.
