City to consider dog park proposal

ONEONTA _ A proposal for a dog park in the city is under review by the city Parks and Recreation Commission.

Dog parks are typically fenced-in areas where dog owners can allow their pets to run off the leash.

The city has a leash law, which requires dogs to be leashed and under the control of their owners when off their property.

However, unleashed dogs are sometimes seen with their owners playing in city parks.

In a letter to the commission from city resident Chris Moore, the proposal spells out what a dog park might look like and what considerations the city may have.

Moore indicates one possible location for a dog park is a C-shaped section of Catella Park along existing fencing.

His proposal is to add fencing for 250 yards to create a closed, rectangular area. He also recommends a separate enclosed area for small dogs using an additional 30 yards of fencing.

He also suggests using a portion of Susquehanna River Park in the Silas Lane Municipal Park. That park also is the site of the completed portion of the Greenway trail.

The Parks and Recreation Commission did not discuss the plan in detail at its Monday meeting, but Commissioner Geoffrey Davis said he is leading a sub-committee examining its feasibility.

"We're researching, at this point, what costs would be involved in setting up," Davis said.

The sub-committee is also examining issues of location, liability and whether it is something that would be utilized enough by the public to warrant the effort, he said.

But David said the city has received several inquiries about creating a dog park in recent years.

"This is not the first time the issue has come up," Davis said.
