Local viewers tune in to see Giants top Patriots

ONEONTA _ Across Oneonta, Super Bowl parties large and small convened Sunday for the big game.

At the Oneonta Veterans Club on Chestnut Street, fans gathered around several big screen televisions.

The New York Giants were trailing the New England Patriots at halftime, 9-10, and frustration was mounting for Bruce Hall of Oneonta.

"It ain't looking good. The Giants better turn it up," said Hall, who was wearing a Giants hooded sweatshirt.

The close game at halftime was no surprise, said Tony Moore, president of the club, where watching the Super Bowl is a tradition.

"So far, so good," Moore said as he and about a dozen other club members and patrons watched Madonna's halftime extravaganza.

The Super Bowl was panning out like most of the playoff games. It was close.

"Most of them were three-point games," Moore said.

As for his team's prospects, Moore said he was thrilled they still had some.

"I'm just happy they got in the Super Bowl," Moore said.

The lone New England Patriots fan in the club said she didn't mind being outnumbered.

"I love the Boston teams," Gina Divendra said.

But Divendra also said having a New York team in the mix made it a win-win situation for her.

"Only one team can win. Whoever it is, I will be happy," said Divendra, a transplant from Boston to Oneonta. "I thought it would be very, very close. They are both very good teams."

For Jim Foote, a past commander of American Legion Post 259, it wasn't the Super Bowl match-up he was rooting for.

"I'm a Steelers fan," Foote said.

But Foote said he was taking a side for the big game.

"I'm rooting for the Giants, of course," he said.

Other patrons at the club said they were also rooting for the Giants by default. They included a Green Bay Packers fan and Buffalo Bills fan.

In the end, it was the close game many predicted. The Giants kept pace with the Patriots and took the lead in the fourth quarter. It was a lead that sealed a victory celebrated by an occasional shout heard downtown.
