Staff Report
Four horses were euthanized following the April 9 arrest of a Middleburgh man on animal cruelty charges, Schoharie deputies said.
James Young, 43, was arrested on four counts of failure to provide proper sustenance, after a two-month investigation, which began after several complaints were received, deputies said.
On March 29, a search warrant was executed in the town of Fulton, and four horses owned by Young were found to be in poor condition, suffering from malnourishment and dehydration, deputies said. The horses were lethargic and infested with lice, according to a veterinarian.
The animals were put down by Young, deputies said. Two other horses he owned were not in as poor condition and are still being monitored, deputies said.
Young was issued appearance tickets on the charges and appeared in Fulton Town Court on April 13, deputies said. The case was adjourned to May 25, to allow Young to obtain an attorney, a court official said.
