-A supply for three or more days of water -- one gallon per person per day; a three- to five-day supply of nonperishable foods that do not require refrigeration, such as peanut butter, crackers and other high-energy foods.
-A manual can opener.
-Clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes for each family member, and sleeping bags or blankets.
-A week's supply of prescription medications, and items for infants and for elderly or other relatives with special needs.
-Identification, credit cards, photocopies of important family documents, including home insurance information, lists of important medical information, family physicians and serial numbers of medical devices, such as pacemakers.
