Staff Report
Delaware County will receive $28,409 in federal funding to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county, but applications must be received by March 20.
Delaware County was selected to receive the funds by a national board chaired by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency. The board consists of representatives from the American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA; The Salvation Army; United Jewish Communities and United Way of America.
The organizations were charged with distributing funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas nationwide.
A local board made up of the Council of Churches, United Way, American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Delaware Opportunities, the Department of Social Services, Catholic Charities and the Delaware County Board of Supervisors will determine how to distribute the funds in Delaware County.
Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; and have the demonstrated capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs. Private voluntary organizations must have a voluntary board.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds should contact Susan Dapkins at Delaware Opportunities, 35430 State Highway 10, Hamden, NY 13782 or call 746-1750 for an application.
