A Morris woman is collecting DVDs of Christmas movies to send to her son, who she said is serving with the Army in Iraq.
Linda Smith said Monday that her son, Lt. Christopher Kennedy, asked for copies of Christmas movies in a recent e-mail. She has a copy of ``It's a Wonderful Life,'' she said, but thought it would be a good idea to send other holiday movies and cartoons to brighten the soldiers' spirits.
The Daily Star is collecting the DVDs, which Smith said can be new or used. Smith said the deadline for donors to drop off DVDs is 5 p.m. Wednesday, and she plans to mail them Thursday.
``If they would like to put a little note in for the soldiers, that would be wonderful, too,'' Smith said.
This past weekend, Kennedy e-mailed his mother a note about how he and other soldiers had decorated their tent. When Smith asked if she could send something to him and to hand out to others, his response was ``Christmas movies.''
Kennedy, in the Army Reserves, previously served a tour in Iraq and an assignment in Afghanistan, she said, and he now is in Iraq working in civil affairs as a liaison between the U.S. military and government and the Iraqi people to ensure cultural considerations.
He is a 2000 graduate of Morris Central School and studied political science at the State University College at Geneseo, Smith said, and his home is in Amherst with his wife, Jessica.
DVDs may be left at the customer service department off of the West Street parking lot at The Daily Star. The newspaper building is at the intersection of West and Chestnut streets in Oneonta.
