Foothills' films focusing on winter

The Foothills Performing Arts Center will present "Ice, Snow, and Cold: Because There's Never Enough" as part of its continuing film series. The series will feature films inspired by or taking place in wintry landscapes. Drink specials, giveaways and guest speakers will be featured throughout the series. The schedule is as follows:

Monday: "A Simple Plan," (R) 8 p.m.

Two brothers and a friend find $4 million in the cockpit of a downed plane. The pilot is dead. No one is looking for the money. To keep it, all they have to do is wait.

Dec. 14: "Dr. Zhivago" (Unrated), 7 p.m.

This classic tale of love and the Bolshevik Revolution is the winner of 5 Oscars and numerous other awards and nominations. Two-for-one White Russians will be available from the bar for those ages 21 and older.

Dec. 21: "Encounters at the End of the World" (G), 8 p.m.

This Werner Herzog documentary looks at the men and women who live and work in Antarctica. Moviegoers will receive a free box of Sno Caps with admission.

Dec. 28: "First Snow" (R), 8 p.m.

A psychic's ominous reading sends an arrogant salesman into a tailspin when he's told his life will change at the first snow. Special NY Lottery scratch-off giveaway with admission _ what's your fate?

Jan. 4: "The Sweet Hereafter" (R), 8 p.m.

A rural community struggles to heal following a tragic school-bus accident that kills nearly all of the town's children. One girl, a survivor left in a wheelchair after the accident, finds the courage to lead her community to the sweet hereafter.

Jan. 11: "The Shining" (R), 8 p.m.

This Stephen King story tells the haunting tale of a family living in an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence pushes the father into madness. Directed by Stanley Kubrick. This film will be introduced by an extra special guest and there will be a movie poster raffle!

Jan. 18: "Smilla's Sense of Snow" (R), 8 p.m.

When a boy falls off a roof to his death in an icy Copenhagen town, Smilla, an expert of ice and snow, begins to doubt it was an accident. As clues are uncovered, so might the truth of the controversy. Free Danish pastry and coffee with admission.

Jan. 25: "Fargo" (R), 8 p.m.

Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart because of his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of pregnant Marge Gunderson. "Fargo" is the winner of two Oscars and is by comic geniuses Joel and Ethan Cohen. North Dakota-inspired door prizes and cocktail special.

The Monday night film series tickets are $5, and the bar will be open for refreshments.
