Forum set on student rights

ONEONTA _ The Oneonta Area Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will sponsor “Students: Know Your Rights,” an informational civil rights session, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the State University of New York’s Center for Multicultural Experiences. The program is open to the public.

Leading the discussion will be Oneonta lawyers Andrew Puritz and Ryan Miosek, who will answer students’ questions and inform them of their civil rights and on how to respond to law-enforcement procedures.

Funded by the Student Association of SUNY Oneonta, the event is cosponsored by the Department of Africana and Latino studies, the Hispanic Organization for Learning and Advancement, the Caribbean Students Association, the Africana and Latino Studies Club, Sistah Sistah, Chi Upsilon Sigma and the Center for Multicultural Experiences.

Lighting event set

ONEONTA _ Main Street Oneonta will host its annual Christmastree- lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday in Muller Plaza on Main Street. Main Street will be closed from 5 to 8 p.m.

The event will feature refreshments, horsedrawn wagon rides, live reindeer, carols by the Catskill Choral Society and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus in their cottage. Gingerbread houses will be on display in storefront windows, and members of the Fokine Ballet Company will portray dances from “The Nutcracker.”

Crouch to attend town meeting

MASONVILLE _ Assemblyman Clifford W. Crouch, R-Guilford, announced he will attend a town board meeting on Wednesday to meet with constituents.

In a statement released Monday, Crouch thanked the members of the town board for allowing him to speak at the session. The meeting will run from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Masonville Church at the corner of state routes 206 and 8. It is open to the public.

Budget hearing planned

COOPERSTOWN _ The tentative 2010 budget for Otsego County will be discussed at a public hearing at the Otsego County Courthouse at 193 Main St. at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The budget, filed by Treasurer Myrna Thayne in November, calls for a property-tax levy increase of more than 11 percent.
