The Common Council will host a public hearing on the proposed 2010 budget Tuesday at the start of its regularly scheduled meeting.
A motion to adopt the budget is also on the agenda for the 7:30 p.m. meeting at City Hall.
The tentative fiscal plan for next year shows a 2.9 percent reduction in overall spending from this year's budget, but a 4 percent increase in the tax levy.
The proposal includes an application of between $900,000 and $1 million from the city's fund balance. This was done to offset the decline in revenues and keep the tax levy increase at 4 percent, according to city officials.
Preliminary estimates show that for a home assessed at $85,000 _ which is the average in the city _ there would be an increase of about $45 from last year's tax bill for that homeowner.
The city is looking at a $13.4 million general fund budget, a decline of $300,000 from the 2009 adopted budget, Mayor John Nader said previously.
Separate increases in fees would be levied against property owners for water and sewer services.
The overall tentative budget is $17.6 million. Last year, the Common Council adopted an $18.3 million overall budget.
The Intergovernmental Affairs Committee will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
