Otsego County Judge Brian D. Burns was recently appointed to the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee's Task Force on Impaired Driving.
The purpose of the task force is to conduct a comprehensive examination of the scope and causes of the problem of impaired driving and develop recommendations for reducing crashes resulting from this illegal and dangerous behavior.
Other members of the task force include representatives from the state Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Health, Division of Criminal Justice Services, Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, Drinking Driver Program Director's Association, Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research and the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services.
According to a media release, Burns will lead a group working to identify issues that affect the ability of the courts to adjudicate impaired-driving cases and to provide training to local justices and court staff to better understand the impaired-driving laws.
Otsego County Sheriff Richard J. Devlin of Milford is coordinator of the task force.
