Lockdown drill held at Oneonta schools

Staff Report

A lockdown at Oneonta Middle and High schools Friday morning was part of a scheduled drill coordinated with the state police K-9 unit and local law enforcement officials, high school Principal Nancy Osborn said.

The approximately hourlong event began about 9:15 a.m., she said. Students and teachers stayed in their classrooms while administrators, troopers and Oneonta police conducted a sweep of the school with drug-sniffing dogs.

No drugs were located during the drill, Osborn said.

The last time such an event took place was about two years ago, she said. It was a good opportunity to practice procedures in case there was an emergency, while sending a message that drugs don't belong in school, the principal said.

The experience will be shared with the school's district safety committee to see if improvements need to be made, she said.
