Afton Central School received a $750 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance on Friday. It was presented by Ed Piccirillo, manager of the Afton Xtra Mart that nominated the school.
"It's a great opportunity to support the school," Piccirillo said. This is the second year he applied for the grant.
Afton Superintendent Elizabeth Briggs said she was glad the program allows the store and company to support the school and "give back to the community."
With the state budget, "we won't have money to do extra programs, so this is helpful," she said.
Beth Snyder, ExxonMobil public-affairs adviser, said that this is the 10th year for the grants, which allow schools to partner with local Exxon and Mobil stores. The awards, which had been $500 until this year, encourage math and science programs in the schools.
