Boy, 12, arrested in brother's shooting

A 12-year-old Deposit boy was arrested as a juvenile delinquent for conduct that would constitute the crime of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his 8-year-old brother, state police said Monday.

Troopers did not release the names of the two boys.

At approximately 5:19 p.m. Saturday, Broome County emergency services received a 911 emergency call regarding a reported accidental shooting at 479 Neale Road in Deposit.

Troopers said a preliminary investigation revealed the boys were at the residence without adult supervision when the older brother shot the younger boy.

The child was treated at the scene by responding troopers and Deposit Ambulance personnel and was taken by MedEvac Helicopter to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, where he was later pronounced dead.

Troopers said the investigation revealed the 12-year-old retrieved a rifle from inside the residence and discharged one round, striking his brother and fatally wounding him.

The investigation is ongoing.
