The state Department of Agriculture partnered with organizations throughout the state to present Farm to You Fest 2009!, this year's celebration of New York Harvest for New York Kids Week.
According to a media release from state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, the weeklong celebration began Monday and continues through today, highlighting local food and agriculture in programs for young people.
Locally, Schoharie Valley Farm-to-School events were planned in Cobleskill-Richmondville, Gilboa-Conesville, Jefferson, Schoharie and Sharon Springs central school districts, including cafeteria posters and handouts, Pride of New York stickers and local vegetable displays.
Schoharie County Bounty also partnered with the Schoharie County Chamber to host a "Buy Local" week highlighting local products. Sen. James Seward, R-Milford, visited Schoharie Central School Thursday to participate in Farm to You Fest and serve local produce to students.
Although materials have been requested by and distributed to more than 50 school districts throughout the state, many are still available.
Those interested in ordering supplies may visit the department's Farm to School website at www.agmkt.state.ny.us/f2s/news.html for an order form.
The website also includes resources available to support farm-to-school efforts throughout the year.
Farm to You Fest 2009! is supported by the New York Farm to School Coordinating Committee.
The goal of the committee is to increase the consumption in schools of nutritious foods grown and produced in New York to strengthen local agriculture, improve student health and promote regional food systems awareness.
