Hartwick to honor family

ONEONTA _ Hartwick College will honor the Phelps family today for its long-standing commitment to the college in a ceremony on campus.

The public is invited to join Hartwick College President Dr. Margaret L. Drugovich and the members of the Board of Trustees in honoring the Phelps family. The ceremony will take place at 12:45 p.m. at the front entrance of Bresee Hall.

The members of the Phelps family _ Stanford Phelps, Trustee Emerita Betsy Phelps and Trustee Kate Phelps McNamara, class of 1986 _ have given their time and resources to Hartwick College for more than 25 years, culminating in a gift to provide for recent renovations to Bresee Hall, presenters said. The celebration will include the unveiling of a plaque to recognize the family's role in the preservation of Bresee Hall, the first building erected on the college campus.

Oneonta High School Alumni Weekend events will begin today with the third annual alumni golf tournament at the Oneonta Country Club. Check-in, with refreshments, will begin at 10 a.m., with lunch served from 11 a.m. to noon. The tournament will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

The alumni banquet will begin at 6 p.m. Friday at the Asa Allison Memorial Building, the former Armory, at 4 Academy St. Music, food and drinks will be served from 6 to 10 p.m. Bus service will be provided from the municipal parking garage every half-hour.

On Saturday, events will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Oneonta High School, when Alumni of the Year, Wall of Distinction and Hall of Fame honorees will be recognized. A tailgate party will begin at 11:30 a.m. before the homecoming game, which will kick off at 1:30 p.m. Alumni are also encouraged to attend the Pit Run pasta dinner at 6 p.m. at the Oneonta Elks Club, organizers said.

The Elks Club will also host a breakfast buffet at 8 a.m. Sunday before the start of the Pit Run.

Lecture set at SUNY Oneonta

ONEONTA _ Dr. William H. Isbell, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the anthropology department at Binghamton University, will present a lecture titled "The City in Ancient Peru" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center at the State University College at Oneonta. The program is free and open to the public.

Isbell, who has taught at Binghamton University for 38 years, is an archaeologist specializing in the prehistoric cultures of Andean South America. He has received numerous grants from the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society and private foundations for his archaeological research in Peru and Bolivia. The author of 10 books, Isbell has taught as a Fulbright visiting professor in Ayacucho's National University of Huamanga and Lima's Catholic University of Peru. He has been named a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard's Dumbarton Oaks three times.

Isbell's presentation is co-sponsored by the SUNY Oneonta History Department, History Club and public events committee. More information is available from the department at 436-3326.

Walton man arrested after domestic dispute

A Walton man was arrested Wednesday on several charges following a domestic dispute, Delaware County deputies said.

Gerald "Jake" D. Murphy, no age given, was arrested on third-degree attempted arson, a class D felony, two counts of second-degree menacing, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment, fourth-degree criminal mischief, all class A misdemeanors, deputies said.

He was sent to Delaware county jail on $2,500 cash bail pending a felony hearing.

Norwich man charged with child porn

A Norwich man was arrested for possessing child pornography, according to a media release received Wednesday from Chenango deputies.

John H. Dorr, 64, was arrested for possessing an obscene sexual performance by a child, a class E felony, deputies said. No arrest date was given.

The child was less than 16 years old, and the material was on a computer, deputies said.

He was arraigned in the Plymouth Town Court and sent to Chenango county jail on $25,000 bail.
