New York state Sen. James Seward, R-Milford, announced Wednesday that he supports Republican Rick Lazio, a former U.S. representative from Long Island, to be the state's next governor.
``I am happy to endorse Rick Lazio,'' Seward stated in an e-mail to The Daily Star. ``He's the right man at the right time to lead our state to a brighter future. Democratic leadership in Albany is driving our state over a fiscal cliff. Rick's message of cutting spending, lowering taxes and growing jobs is exactly what our state needs.''
In 2000, Lazio visited Cooperstown during his campaign for the U.S. Senate. In that effort, he lost to Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is U.S. secretary of state.
Gov. David Paterson, a Democrat, has said he won't run for the governor's office, and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, also a Democrat, hasn't officially declared his candidacy.
