Cooperstown elected a mayor during Tuesday's voting.
Republican Joseph Booan Jr. defeated Democrat Jeff Katz, 431-329. The results in several Cooperstown contests and several other village elections were not available Tuesday night.
Booan replaces Republican Mayor Carol Waller, who chose not to seek re-election this year.
The voter turnout was the largest turnout in recent years.
"I'm very excited," Booan said Wednesday. "This was a very important election for the village."
Katz will remain on the board of trustees, where he has a year remaining in his second three-year term.
Booan said that he spoke to his opponent many times during the campaign, and they agreed that, regardless of the outcome, they would work together to accomplish the business of the village.
Katz said he was "obviously disappointed, but I congratulate Joe and wish him luck as the next mayor."
