Otsego County Treasurer Myrna Thayne, whose term is expiring, will not be on the general election ballot in November following the results of Tuesday's Otsego Republican primary.
She said she was not surprised by her 1,585-606 loss to county Republican Committee endorsed candidate Edward Keator Jr.
"I am not angry," she said, thanking all those who supported her, including community leaders, staff and the voting public.
Keator, who previously secured the Independence and Conservative parties' nominations, will face Democratic candidate Daniel Crowell in November.
Controversy surrounded Thayne early in her term that began in 2006. She worked with the county board of representatives on a 2007 budget that mistakenly raised the tax levy 22 percent.
After the problem was detected, the board refunded the excess to taxpayers, and several representatives blamed Thayne, but she claimed she was a "scapegoat." The board refused to approve her budget in 2008 and this year.
"I've done a good job as a public servant," Thayne said. But she said she understands the voters have said "we want a change."
She said she will serve out her term and has no plans for what she will do when it expires.
Keator said, "I'm very pleased with the outcome."
This is the first step in getting the county treasurer's office back on track, he said.
Keator said he expects to be back at work today getting his message to the people of the county that his nearly 30 years of financial experience will help him get the job done.
In other races, Republican primary results show that Otsego County Board of Representatives District 6 incumbent Donald Lindberg of Worcester defeated John Imperato Sr. of Schenevus by a vote of 286-113.
Sidney Republican committee candidate Bob McCarthy defeated incumbent Joseph Maddalone, 281-134, according to McCarthy. The Delaware County Board of Elections closed before the total was received.
McCarthy said he plans to continue his campaign, based on a message of transparency, into the November election against Democrat Dawn Rivers Baker.
Maddalone, who announced he would not seek re-election before seeking the primary win, said he was uncertain if he would run for the position as an independent.
