Voters to cast ballots in area primaries today

By Tom Grace
Cooperstown News Bureau

Today from noon to 9 p.m., voters in Otsego, Delaware and Chenango counties will select nominees in several races to represent their parties in the Nov. 3 general election.

In Otsego County, many primary contests are between Republican candidates, although one of the biggest is for the Democratic nomination for Oneonta mayor.

That race pits Democrat Jason Corrigan, 21, a student at the State University College at Oneonta, against Richard Miller, 66, retired president of Hartwick College.

Miller is an independent voter who has been authorized by the county’s Democratic Committee to run as a Democrat.

Both men have secured independent ballot lines and will face Republican Erik Miller in November regardless of who wins today.

Also in the city of Oneonta, city Judge Lucy Bernier, a Democrat, and city Prosecutor Michael Getman, a Republican, will meet in the Independence Party primary for judge.

Otsego County has one countywide primary as incumbent Republican Treasurer Myrna Thayne faces Republican Edward Keator, who is endorsed by the county’s Republican Committee.

Keator has secured the Independence and Conservative parties’ nominations and will be on the November ballot no matter who wins the primary. Thayne, who is completing her first four year term, must win today to be on the November ballot. Republican voters in Westford, Worcester, Maryland and Decatur will select a nominee for the Otsego County Board of Representatives _ incumbent Donald Lindberg of Worcester or John Imperato of Schenevus.

Both Republicans have secured secondary ballot lines and will be on the November ballot. In Otsego County, there are also a number of primaries for town offices, including the race for Roseboom town supervisor, where incumbent Republican Michael Stannard faces Republican Greta Peterson.

In the towns of Butternuts, Decatur, Maryland, Middlefield, Otsego and Unadilla, Republicans will select their nominees for highway superintendent. There are also many races for other town posts throughout the county.

In Delaware County, Sidney Republicans will select a nominee for town supervisor, who will also serve on the county board, as incumbent Joseph Maddalone of Sidney faces Bob McCarty of Sidney.

R e p u b l i c a n s also will select nominees for highway superintendent in the towns of Colchester and Hancock.

No Democratic primaries are scheduled in Delaware County.

Chenango County Republicans will select a nominee for supervisor from Coventry, where Janice O’Shea faces John Phelan Sr. Other races are set for several other town offices. No Democratic primaries are scheduled in Chenango County.

No primaries are scheduled in Schoharie County today.
