Dairy farmers and concerned residents will have an opportunity Friday to discuss federal legislation that could provide farmers with a better price for milk, a meeting organizer said.
The session at 1 p.m. at Mount Markham Middle School is sponsored by Progressive Agriculture Organization, of Meshoppen, Pa., a group dedicated to preserving the family farm, according to its website.
The meeting will be similar to one held in West Winfield on March 10, said Pro Ag manager Arden Tewksbury. Among the issues discussed then was the Specter-Casey dairy bill, which would price milk using the national average cost of production as determined by the USDA, according to a Pro Ag media release. Other issues concerning pricing will also be addressed, Tewksbury said.
The price paid to farmers for milk is about $12 for 100 pounds, or per hundredweight. The cost of production is about $3 to $5 more than that, officials said.
The school is at 500 Fairground Road in West Winfield.
