Two homeless after fire

Staff Report

A man and his nephew are homeless after a fire tore through their Wikoff Road home in Cherry Valley on Monday night.

Dewitt Youngs and his nephew Tony Youngs were not home at the time of the blaze, which was reported at about 6:45 p.m. Monday, Cherry Valley Fire Chief Martin Field Jr. said Tuesday.

The Youngs were out doing farm work when a passer-by reported the fire, Field said.

The older, two-story home at 122 Wickoff Road was destroyed, he added.

"It was fully involved when we got there," Field said. "It had way too much of a head start.''

Springfield and Middlefield fire departments assisted Cherry Valley Fire Department.

Field said there were about 40 firefighters who fought the blaze.

"We were on the scene about five hours," Field said. No injuries were reported.

The residents were unable to salvage anything from the home, and a tractor parked outside the house also was destroyed, he said.

"They lost everything," Field said. The cause was still under investigation Tuesday.
